It is the beginning of the 22nd century. Mankind has left the cradle. New technologies allow humanity to push ever deeper into the void and exploit the resources of the solar system. But with new frontiers come new conflicts. Old and new Great Powers are locked in a constant struggle for dominance in the solar system. The peace between them is maintained only by a delicate balance of power. All it takes is one spark to light the fuse.

A small incident near the Moon starts a war between China and the US that quickly grows to engulf the entire world in flames and spread to the distant corners of the solar system. For the first time in history, battles are fought on the Moon, on Mars and beyond. The conflict rages from the plains of Poland to the wastes of Mare Imbrium, from deep space to the endless desert of the Tharsis Highlands. The stakes are higher than ever. The victors will rule the solar system. The vanquished will be ground underfoot.

Weltenbrand is a 200,000 word novel of war in the far future. From the perspective of Generals and politicians directing it to the view of the soldiers who have to fight it, this story shows how war has changed in the year 2114 - and how it hasn't.

Weltenbrand Worlds Aflame eBook Robert Dreyer

A very solid and well-written political/military action story that had me hooked from the beginning chapter. Now if you are looking for a quick read, this is not that sort of book. The story simmers along relating the political drama that leads the new British Empire, Europe and America into war against Russia, China and India and then all of sudden it bubbles up during major battles in the war. The battles themselves take place on Mars, in and around the Belt, the Moon and in and around Earth and the author does a great job not only in describing the battle action but highlighting, through his characters, the difficulties of carrying out campaigns on low-gravity/no gravity worlds (Mars and the Moon) as well as the realities of battling in space. The main characters come from the different countries involved in the war and are sufficiently developed to give you an impression of who they are, their perspectives, fears and anxieties. All in all a very engrossing story that is grand in scope but maintains a strong human element and a wry sense of humour as a counter-point to the darkness and death that is so descriptive of war.

Weltenbrand Worlds Aflame eBook Robert Dreyer Reviews

I'm not going to claim the book was especially groundbreaking, but in fairness, the breaking of ground is not precisely what i expect in milSF. It was, however, a reasonably absorbing read, enough to keep the pages turning and keep seeing what happens next. The battles - the meat of the subgenre - are pretty well done from Earth, to space, and out to the moon and Mars, the tactics and physics can be followed without being reduced to a simplistic mush. On the strategic front, neither side has any particular attachment to the idiot ball, and as far as the politics go, it's mercifully free of cringe-inducing evil strawmen for the Heroes to knock over. All in all, a decent first effort, and worth the price
Many books have been written about military conflict on a large scale and the political and diplomatic maneuvering leading up to it. The best also presented the human side using multiple POV's from all the sides of the conflict. Worlds Aflame is one such book updated with believable world building depicting our world as it might be in another century. Near orbit is contested by multiple major powers and Mars and beyond have military deployments by the big players. As the book opens we are introduced to a number of characters that will remain with us through a long and satisfying read. Dyer shows a solid grasp of politics, military doctrine, and common sense combined with believable, sympathetic characters on all the sides. He refrains from taking sides-there do not seem to be 'good guys' or 'bad guys' so much as just regular people caught up in forces seeming beyond their control. Rarely have I seen space opera done in such a mature reflective way. Don't worry there is plenty of action but its not body count and gore focused, its just a story and a good one. Well done-recommended.
Follows the basic formula of a lot of books of like mind. Character development is quite good though. The mathematical portions introduced some things I never seriously considered.
I quite liked this book. Good story with just enough character development to elevate it past a simple war chronicle. Quite well written descriptions of orbital combat and maneuvering as well that were interesting to read.
This novel is quite engrossing. It's also quite long, but its bounces from protagonist to protagonist strikes a fine balance that both keeps the plot fresh and moving forward.

This is nominally a sci-fi novel, but make no mistake, it's no space opera. This is a modern war novel, with a realistic near-future as the backdrop. The author stays in the realm of realistic physics, but all the details are reserved for thr minutia and grandiosity of war, and the protagonists who fight the war.

Beyond worth your bucks and your time to read if you enjoy war stories.
Ambitious...best describes this author's attempt to provide the reader with the view point of combatant nations in a worldwide conflict that spills out into the solar system. The story is told through the eyes of a Russian Space Marshal, Indian politician, British intelligence officer, Chinese space fighter pilot, British space marine on the moon, German tank commander on Mars, French ground force commander,, US Captain of small space attack ship and a host of supporting characters. The storyline, as a result, jumps all over the place and it takes some effort to keep track of each story within the story.
Pros The read has solid length and is a good value for the price. There is a fair amount of action and plenty of character development. Some typos but not enough to distract from the read.
Cons The read is somewhat disjointed, too many information dumps that slow the flow and for a first time author this form of story telling is perhaps slightly beyond his current skill set.
I would have given the read 3.5 stars and believe this author will improve with time. If you enjoy an epic tale...this might be a read you would enjoy.
