Graustark is a fictional country in Eastern Europe with stories involving court intrigue, royal disguise, and romance. The novels gave their name to a fictional genre called Graustarkian romance.

1901's novel set in the fabled land of Graustark (located approximately where the Carpatho-Ukraine is located in the southern Carpathian mountains), is something of a chore to read. I think this was originally published as a serialized story before gaining hardcover publication in 1902 as the protagonists make frequent changes of plans as they can't live without each other, thus ensuring the serialization continues on and on and on. Despite frequent labeling of the novel as "Ruritanian", the plot does not closely mimic the earlier Hawkins novel. There are no less than five sequels, the last two of which do not have an inexpensive Kindle edition.

The Graustark story is the simple/classic formula 1) boy meets girl; 2) boy looses girl; 3) boy gets girl back. It's told with an overwhelmingly American gingoism, and some dialect portrayals that are not politically acceptable today. The book gives insight into the still-strong American pride in the republic versus monarchies that existed a century ago. I thought the plot devices were usually pretty transparent, but one or two did surprise me - in part because they were so out-of-left field. The book foretells a couple of significant political events unintentially -- the demand of reparations by a nation that wins a war, and the overwhelming burden it imposes on the loser -- as in WWI; and the expectation that a royal ruler who married a commoner would have to abdicate the throne -- as in 1930's England. I plan to read at least the first sequel to see where the story goes next. If this were a modern book, I'd give it 2 stars, but for what it reveals, it gets an additional rating score.
Honor. Duty. Loyalty. Dignity. If you are one of the ubermensch intelligentsia and laugh at these ideals, this book is not for you. They are hallmarks of a once-popular literary sub-genre called "Ruritanian Romances" of which GRAUSTARK was one of the most popular exemplars.

GRAUSTARK was so popular in its day, copies were readily available at book sales as late as the 1990s. Even today so many copies float about second-hand booksellers often don't jack up the prices and gouge buyers on the pretense it's scarce.

Following the masterpiece THE PRISONER OF ZENDA, set in Ruritania, a mythical east European country, many other writers jumped on the bandwagon. George Barr McCutcheon, a two-hit wonder (his other most famous work is the oft-filmed BREWSTER'S MILLIONS) and GRAUSTARK started a series of books about its denizens. These Ruritanian books were romances in the truest sense, not just about love, though love is the guiding passion of GRAUSTARK's heroes, the incognito princess and the American who travels to Europe to find her.

Unfortunately, while McCutcheon has some surprising twists in the book even for readers a century on (and an alternative resolution to the problem posed that separates the ZENDA lovers), McCutcheon was never a great storyteller. These days, of course, Ruritanian romances are relegated to "romance" novels and some of the cleverer fantasy novels (Laumer's WORLDS OF IMPERIUM, etc) but Graustark, despite having value people laugh at today (which is why the world is in such a mess) is an important peg in a certain kind of literary history. It might be less readable today because the characters are too introspective (well, read some early Wodehouse!--it's about the same). It's nowhere as good as Zenda but if you enjoy the genre, or at least the virtues of duty, honor, friendship, loyalty and love that defies ranks and boundaries, it's a must.
Even though it was written 100 years ago, this still had the magic adventure, romance, mystery, a little comic relief...second time around for me. It's not too long, and was a very enjoyable part of my vacation. I'm glad it's part of a series so the characters can grow and develop over the years. Although I have the actual original hardcover, by reading it on my I don't have to worry about damaging the "antique," and as a FREE book on , it was a great bargain! Either a man or a woman would be interested.
I purchased this book for a course in American Literature. There aren't many printed version of this text, so my professor has to make due with what is available. However, NORILANA BOOKS ought to be too ashamed to call themselves a publisher. Sometimes, independent companies shouldn't do what the big boys do. This book has too many typos and the chapters are incorrectly numbered. For example, when I finished reading chapter 22, the next chapter was 13.

Now onto the book I'd rate it 4 STARS. The story is very interesting and draws the reader in from the beginning, because McCutcheon's is a good writer. I would recommend this story to anyone looking to read something outside their normal realm. I just would highly recommend they download the free Google Books version. Or see if there is another version offered on . But, DO NOT under any circumstances buy this book from this craptastic publisher.
The need to await a print run resulted in a longer than usual delay, but nothing unexected.
You can only read this book if you are expecting it to be fairly ridiculous. Luckily, the ridiculous aspects don't clothesline the fun. The ending drags a hair -- the main character is placed into a static, imprisoned situation that halts the drama and dismantles our disbelief suspension -- but the solution to the mystery is cheeky.
