I knew she was bad news the minute she walked into the bar.
She was a redhead. I always had a thing for redheads. One in particular, actually. She was dead, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t holding my breath for a second or two every time I saw another girl with red hair.
This one was very much alive, and once she walked in she was also the life of the room. Men I’d been serving drinks to for years, who smiled so little if you told me they had no teeth I would’ve believed it, lit up like a kid meeting the world’s cutest bunny.
The girl’s name was Lucy and she was there to see a buddy of mine, who we’ll call Al. That wasn’t his name, but Al turned out to be kind of important, and this story is kind of embarrassing for him, so even though he’s not around any more let’s stick with Al.
The redhead was either going to get him killed, or she was going to get me killed. I could tell right away. Call it gut instinct if you want, but I’m alive today because I know what bad news looks like as soon as I see it.
Also, she was a succubus.
--Adam the immortal
The year was 1942, there was a war on, and Adam was having a lot of trouble avoiding the attention of some important people. The kind of people with guns, and ways to make a fella disappear. He was caught somewhere between the mob and the government, and the only way out involved a red-haired dame he was pretty sure he couldn't trust.
In Hard-Boiled Immortal, the second adventure in The Immortal Chronicles Adam has to figure out how to survive wartime from the quiet corner of a bar in Chicago... if he can.
HardBoiled Immortal The Immortal Chronicles Book 2 eBook Gene Doucette
It's the 1940s and Adam, who goes by Rocky (as one would in the 1940s,) finds himself in the middle of yet another fine mess. Hard-Boiled Immortal's noir-esque dialog is a hoot to read in his voice. And there's a fiery, redheaded femme fatale who just happens to be a succubus. Naturally. If Adam were real - and I'm not saying he isn't *ahem* - I would buy him a keg of his favorite beer, or a barrel of his favorite wine, and sit him down. I'd ask him questions about his 60-plus-thousand years on this little blue marble and record every single word, no matter how rambling. He's just full of so many fun stories. Fortunately, Gene Doucette has Adam on speed-dial, so we get these glimpses into his long life.
I know that the Immortal Trilogy ends in October, but I hope Doucette continues on with the Chronicles. I just can't get enough. This is the type of originality that belongs on the screen, big or small. At the very least, Adam deserves his own graphic novels. Get on it, Hollywood!
If you're a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, you might like this series as well.

HardBoiled Immortal The Immortal Chronicles Book 2 eBook Gene Doucette Reviews
It reminded me of the film gilda.
Hayworth and Glen Ford could have turned this into a great noir film.
Really great read
I am filling up the 20 word requirement. Id be happier just clicking 5 stars and calling it a night. Great book tho
In this latest installment of the Immortal Chronicles, Adam gets himself into and then out of a life-or-death situation involving a dive bar, a world war, some tough guys, and a gal who's only half human.
What more could you ask for? Enjoyed and Recommended.
All of the immortal chronicles are fun, quick reads - telling little back stories in Adam's long (LOOOONG) life. A fun caper, with spies and a bit of crime 'noir' feel to it.
Adam - no last name - has been around for a long, long time. He mentions 60,000 years, but that's only a rough guess. He doesn't age, figure maybe he's late 30s, early 40s and stays at way. Though he can't get sick, he can be killed. Street wise, he sees a lot of streets through time, many adventures through the ages. A great mix of near magic, only a bit erotic, much humor, and plenty of adventure. Easy and fun to read. I'll be following Adam, hope you will too.
I really enjoyed this edition of the Immortal Chronicles! Set in the 1940's as a Sam Spade noir type story, it sees Adam (or Rocky as he was calling himself then) trying to wait out the war in a little bar. But after meeting up with a physicist and a succubus, things take a turn.
I've been a fan of the Immortal books since the first came out and this was a great filler in the long canvas of Adam's life. This story (and the series) are easily one of my all time favourite urban fantasy series and I definately recommend you give it a try!
I've really enjoyed Gene Doucette's 'Immortal' series and, with the addition of some noire elements in this short story set in the same universe, I'm a very happy camper (except the whole it's-a-short-story-and-I-want-more aspect). Adam (the immortal) is as self-deprecating/aware as ever and seeing him state-side during WWII is pretty darn amusing.
It's a short, so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail, but if you've enjoyed Immortal, Hellenic Immortal and Immortal at Sea (another short) you'll definitely get a kick out of Adam-as-Continental-Op. If you haven't read the others, you should probably get on that. Adam's funny, drunk, accidentally heroic, and tells a heck of a story.
